Sealants are used during various types of surgery to prevent leakage of liquids, gases or solids.
CoSeal® is a novel, fully synthetic sealing agent designed to optimize healing by rapidly sealing tissue surfaces, suture lines and synthetic grafts during surgery. The original formulation was first approved in Europe and then the United States for cardiovascular indications. A new premixed configuration of CoSeal® has now received both U.S. FDA and European CE Mark approval. The new premixed configuration of CoSeal® affords more flexibility to surgeons, is simpler to use, can be stored at room temperature, and has a two-hour lifespan once activated.
CoSeal® is a fully synthetic material that has been proven to be highly biocompatible. It contains no human or animal products, so it carries minimal risk of disease transmission or infection. In addition, it is fast acting and fully resorbable within weeks. Following application, CoSeal® quickly forms a flexible seal, which remains intact at the site of application that is able to withstand arterial pressure.
Through a strategic alliance, Baxter Healthcare Corp. is responsible for selling, marketing, distribution and manufacturing of CoSeal®.
